Young keeper, Conor Gough, has already signed a two year deal with Bristol Rovers and was given special clearance to make his debut for the Pirates last Saturday.
Though on the wrong end of a 4-0 drubbing at Dahenham & Redbridge, Gough done well enough and will be a useful acquisition for Rovers.
Mikel Alonso, Jason Euell, Gary Doherty, Tosan Popo and Freddie Warren are the others to be released.
Alonso was brought to the club by Jeff Vetere and never really figured in Chris Powell’s plans. He was a little behind the rest of the squad in reporting for pre-season training due to the late finish of the season in Spain. He picked up a few niggling injuries and by the time he was fully fit, Stephens, Hollands, Pritchard, Hughes and Russell were all well ahead of him in the pecking order.
His solitary appearance was in the JPT defeat against Brentford at The Valley. A dedicated pro who always trained hard, Charlton was the wrong club at the wrong time for the likeable Spaniard.
Euell made an emotional return to The Valley and figured in cup matches and as a sub, particularly early on in the season. Clearly past his best, Jason is taking his coaching badges and that is clearly where his future lies. He wants to play on though, so is on the lookout for a new club. He was on loan at AFC Wimbledon for a spell so that may be an option.
Gary Doherty arrived as Phil Parkinson’s marquee signing in the summer of 2010 and formed a massively experienced central defensive partnership with Christian Dailly. A victim of Powell’s desire to start afresh, Doherty has recently been on loan at Wycombe.
The two youngsters will be hoping to get fixed up with new clubs quickly. Popo is a striker who spent some time on loan with Ruben Bover at Lepe.
He made just one appearance for the Addicks, coming on as a late sub against Preston in the Carling Cup.
Freddie Warren – a distant relative of Terry Venables – is a box-to-box midfielder who failed to make an appearance for the first team. Not without ability, Warren is already attracting interest from other clubs.
Some of the players who have been on the periphery of the team are likely to be moved on or go out on seasin ling loans. It’s going to be another interesting summer in SE7.
